Palintology, Rafsanjani, and bad Feng Shwe

Tomorrow the weekday pundits come back to work, fresh and prepared for more analysis of Sarah Palin's resignation and the meaning of Michael Jackson's death. One of the links above is from Sarah's Facebook page, asking you to join her in coming up with the $500,000 in legal fees that she doesn't think she should pay, so she's asking us to do it. And if you are a blogger her lawyer is threatening to sue. I wish she would single me out, I could use the jump in readership...

Also, if you are now planning to invite her to your next Tea Party, now that she's an unemployed mother, don't expect on her showing up unless you can pony up at least $60,000. Even then she may have a conflict of schedules... But now she can follow the footsteps of L Ron Hubbard, get a $7 million advance for her book, and go roving around this great country of ours creating interest and support for her new religion, Palintology...

The BBC reports on the latest from Iran, that one of the two British Embassy employees being held was released. Now they have their token Western terrorist inciter to put on a show trial, torture on video, or even behead if the spirit moves them. The EU is much less willing to impose sanctions or pull out all of their embassy employees over one person, so this is a pure political move on Iran's part. Some opposition clerics got to voice their thoughts: "On Saturday, Mr Rafsanjani - an influential figure in Iranian politics and a prominent backer of Mr Mousavi during the election - met with the families of some of those who have been detained. It was the first time he had spoken publicly since the election. He told the families that nobody with a "vigilant conscience" could be satisfied with the current situation.

"I hope with good management and wisdom the issues would be settled in the next days and the situation could improve ... We should think about protecting the system's long-term interests," Mr Rafsanjani said.
A BBC correspondent said that Mr Rafsanjani appeared to be hinting that a process was going on behind the scenes, which might resolve the current crisis."

Earlier, Iran had let a military general make bluffing statements on how they were not going to be allowed into talks on Iran's nuclear programs since they had interfered with the Iranian election. After being asked to provide evidence of this claim, Iran responded with "Generally speaking, what general are you generalizing about? Do not look behind the veil, pay no attention to that Revolutionary Guard in the corner..." OK, we know that they aren't even that clever and had no response other than to execute 20 people for smuggling drugs; it's just something they do when they get frustrated and they have the highest execution rate in the world, even more than China...

Burma's head military meglomaniac, General Than Shwe, refused to let the United Nation's Secretary General Ban Ki-moon see in person captive Aung San Suu Kyi, saying that she is in the middle of a trial, as if that was a real reason. Than Shwe then postponed continuing the trial, and it looks like his strategy is to keep on postponing until after the mock elections are held next year. Than Shwe is racking up the bad Buddhist points galore, having attacked and killed a bunch o' monks two years ago, and pissing off the local deities when a prominent pagoda he was restoring collapsed a few weeks after his equally arrogant and egotistical wife attended a blessing ceremony for it. It's such a shame that the persecution of the real president of Burma has lasted 19 years, talk about your Buddhist saints...

In response to Ban Ki-moon's snubbing and subsequent report, the UK is threatening more sanctions on its former colony, with more to follow from other countries.

W,e can thank the rest of Europe for getting Russia in the mood for Barack Obama's trip there, as the BBC reports: "The pan-European security and democracy body passed a resolution equating the roles of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany in starting World War II.

The resolution, meant to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain, said that Nazi Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union brought genocide and crimes against humanity to Europe.
It calls for making 23 August a day of remembrance for the victims of Stalinism and Nazism.
On that day in 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a pact that carved up Eastern Europe between the two countries. Out of 385 assembly members, only eight voted against the resolution.

Russia's delegates to the OSCE session were strongly opposed to the resolution and left the hall immediately after it was passed. Joseph Stalin continues to be a hero to many Russians, who credit him with defeating Nazi Germany." Just a small way to show Mother Russia our appreciation for making us what we are today, Ms Merkel, step right up...
